Frequently Asked Questions

How common is hearing loss?

One in 10 people have hearing loss, and this increases to a third of the population over 65. Significantly, 50% of hearing problems occur in the working population.

Do I need a referral?

We can test clients without a referral, although many GP’s do refer to our clinic.

What does a hearing test cost?

At SHC we charge $75 for an adult hearing test and $60 for a child. (We see children over 3½ years of age.) These charges are non refundable at Medicare. Your results are explained to you and a report is sent to your GP, or the Ear Nose and Throat Surgeon.

What’s the difference between an Audiologist and an Audiometrist?

An audiologist is university trained with a science based degree and a post-graduate qualification in audiology, whilst an audiometrist is vocationally trained through TAFE. A significant proportion of an audiometrist’s training is done through an approved mentoring program. Jane MacDonald has been Don MacDonald’s mentor throughout this process. (Don is a University Graduate.)

What happens at a hearing test?

Any new experience can be daunting so therefore we thought it would be helpful and reassuring to briefly explain the basics of what happens when you go for a hearing test ...

Why does everyone seem to mumble?

To understand why this is happening you have to understand your hearing loss. It is very common to have reasonable low frequency hearing which progresses to a significant loss in the high frequencies (or pitches) ...

What are Listening strategies?

We all utilise hearing strategies whether we have normal hearing or we suffer from hearing loss. Indeed we are often unaware we are doing it, Therefore we thought it worth exploring this issue, particularly as communication is a two way process...

What is Bluetooth and how can it help me?

Bluetooth is the name given to a type of short range wireless communication technology that allows electronic devices to talk to each other. ‘Top-end’ hearing aids communicate with each other in this manner, and allow you to access TV’s, MP 3 players or stereos.

How can I hear my mobile phone?

Mobile phones are notoriously difficult for hearing aid wearers, some brands being worse than others. However, a mobile with a speaker can be all that is needed. If your mobile is blue tooth compatible you can utilise a wireless inductive neck loop, worn comfortably around the neck, and this will link up with the telecoil in the hearing aid(s).

The Artone Bluetooth loopset costs $329 and is available through Sunraysia Hearing Clinic.
